What is Holistic Health Care?

I believe it’s the original health care practice. Holistic health care dates back thousands of years. It embraces the concept that you are “greater than and different from the sum of your parts”. It takes your whole person into consideration. Conversely, Western medicine today still focuses on treating symptoms.

While many healthcare practitioners are much more open to CAM – Complimentary and Alternative Medicine than they were even a few years ago, most still have a ways to go.

Those who are open are likely to consider things like meditation, acupuncture and yoga in a patient health care plan. Or body-based practices like massage therapy and spinal manipulation. And natural products like herbs, essential oils and dietary supplements. We’ve even embraced some energy healing methodologies like Reiki, EFT and Pranic Healing.

When comparing Western medicine and Holistic Health, neither is better than the other and both should be considered as part of your overall health care experience. Learning to incorporate both directions allows you to fully take charge of your health and wellness in ways you may never have imagined before.

“Rather than focusing on illness or specific parts of the body, this ancient approach to health considers the whole person and how he or she interacts with his or her environment. It emphasizes the connection of mind, body and spirit. The goal is to achieve maximum well-being, where everything is functioning the very best that is possible.” ~ American Holistic Health Association (AHHA)

By definition, holistic medicine is about lifestyle changes, noninvasive remedies, enhancing life-force energy and embracing the body’s ability to heal itself. It’s patient-empowering.

After 20 years in Western medicine, I lead holistic health care workshops

I lead monthly holistic health care workshops to help others – like you – find what they need to  manage their own care or that of a loved one. In these workshops we explore things like:

• Diet & exercise
• The biology of belief
• Environmental measures
• Attitude & behavior modification
• Relationships and spiritual counseling
• Your ability to heal mind, body and spirit

Holistic health care is a lifestyle change

It’s what you do on a daily basis to care for your mind, body and spirit. And it’s as important as any treatment, remedies or medical interventions you receive. In some aspects it may even be more important. Especially when you consider the role the mind has on all aspects of health and wellness.

“…it teaches patients to take responsibility for their own health and in so doing is: cost-effective in treating both acute and chronic illness; therapeutic in preventing and treating chronic disease; and is essential in creating optimal health.” ~ AHHA

You may opt for holistic health care or holistic medicine because it’s a way to feel empowered in your own health care. You won’t have to mitigate side effects of medications, wait for drugs to work or surgery to fix you. You’ll be able to take immediate actions to enhance your well being on your own, every day.

My personal healing journey

Remember, I spent 20 years in Western medicine. I believed it would always be there to help me. And then it wasn’t. I had to step outside my comfort zone to find new treatment options. As each of us is an individual, we all respond differently. I believe it is your right and responsibility to take charge of your health and wellness.

I tried every known treatment for asthma after being home bound for nearly a year. Acupuncture, hypnosis and EFT worked to cure it. When I suffered with fibromyalgia and insomnia for 3 years, massage, CBD and acupuncture healed my pain and suffering. I was treated for depression for nearly 18 years with pharmaceuticals.  Meditation, healthy boundaries, yoga and acupuncture are what keep me balanced and happy. I watched my dad heal Leukemia in a single Reiki session – and then watched him die from a cerebral hemorrhage 10 weeks later because it was his time. Ultimately his healing was the gift of a peaceful passing.

Your mileage may vary

I’m not here to provide medical advice, I just want you to know you have options. Especially when there’s nothing left that Western medicine can do for you. Holistic health care is available to you in many forms. I want you to find what you need to be your very best all day, every day. So, that’s why I offer holistic health care workshops. And these are subjects that should help you identify strategies that might work for you.
