Happy Mother's Day!
Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there.
Currently most countries celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May. Typically we lavish Mom with presents and special attention. But it hasn’t always been this way.
Only recently dubbed “Mother’s Day,” the traditional practice of honoring of motherhood goes back to the beginning of recorded time, and past rites typically had strong symbolic and spiritual overtones. Goddesses and symbols were honored rather than actual mothers. Taking place in spring, the honoring of maternity, fertility and life were the focus of these celebrations.
Started a mere 105 years ago, with Anna Jarvis in 1908, to honor and add to the foundation of the work her mother, Ann Jarvis began in the 1860s with “Mother’s Friendship Day.” The elder Jarvis focused on work to reunite families torn apart by the Civil War.
Cards, flowers and brunch came much later. So whether you are a mom by genetics, marriage, commitment or just circumstance, you deserve to be honored this Mother’s Day. Do something good for you.
