What is Reiki?

a pregnant women receives a Reiki treatment in a salonThe word Reiki is made of two Japanese words: Rei, which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power,” and Ki, which is “life force energy.” So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.”

There is a non-physical energy that gives life to every living organism. For many thousands of years we have known of this energy and have sought to develop ways to harness its power to heal and influence our lives.

The Japanese call this energy Ki. It is also known as Chi by the Chinese, Prana by a number of Asian cultures and the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost by most of the Western world.

While Reiki is not religious, it is practiced by people of all religious persuasions as well as those with no religious convictions. It is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures.

Many hospitals have incorporated Reiki into their patient care plans before and after procedures, and have reported that while Reiki helps to promote healing with fewer complications, they often also saw a decrease in the use of pain medication, a quicker recovery time, and a shorter hospital stay.

In fact, even celebs are backing up Reiki.  Dr. Mehmet Oz, renowned cardiovascular surgeon, author and host of “The Dr. Oz Show,” introduced millions of viewers to the natural healing practice of Reiki as part of a program on alternative and natural remedies.

Dr. Oz included not only a segment featuring a demonstration by Reiki author Pamela Miles, but an emphatic recommendation to “try Reiki” as the #1 “Oz’s Order” at the show’s conclusion (read more about Dr. Oz’s alternative medicine treatment suggestions).

So what, exactly, is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

Reiki helps to replenish your vital energy and strengthen the immune system. At the same time Reiki helps with both acute and chronic illnesses by reducing and relieving stress.

People may not remember exactly what you did, or what you said, but they will always remember the way you made them feel. – Maya Angelou

Personally, I have seen clients respond to Reiki in miraculous ways. My father’s oncologist called it a miracle too. You see, dad resolved his CML (a type of leukemia) after a single session. For more than 10 years we couldn’t bring his white blood cell count into normal range and he had been told the month before nothing else was working, to prepare for the inevitable. I have also seen clients receive the peace to pass well when it was their time.

In recent years it has become more widely accepted, I have been asked to speak at several hospitals over the past couple of years about Reiki as used in both patient and staff self care. If you haven’t tried Reiki yet, you really should.

Very good article, although Mikao Usui was never a doctor of any kind, this can be checked on the ICRT website (I did my master-teacher degree with William Rand). I believe that Mrs Takata told people that Usui sensei was a doctor (she also claimed he had been a Christian minister despite that not being true) in her desire to make Reiki more appealing to Westerners, bless her soul! Many blessings <3

Great article! I have 3 levels of Reiki training plus QiGong and studies in other areas. It is so beneficial to educate ourselves in caring for our bodies. My intensity of learning in this area began following nerve damage and has been so incredible in increasing my quality of life.

I love that you connected with this. It’s not lost on me that most of us as healers were called to self heal first.

I am a Reiki Master in Australia. I use my Reiki healings, to help some of those who have had bad life experiences. They then are rebalanced, allowing them to think clearer and feel better. So that they can make much better choices and decisions. Often going back to re-education to become Social Workers, Teachers etc to help others.

It starts with a conversation. You need to get out there and make a connection with people at your local hospital. Let me know if you need any help with this.

Going through this post reminds me of my previous roommate!

This is one more example of the mind-body connection and how effective it can be in self-healing. Very similar to the work being done by Dr. Lissa Rankin M.D.
