Remedies for the Common Cold

Truth be told, there is no cure for the common cold. There are, however, many natural ways to alleviate symptoms. Here are a few you can try.

  • Use a neti pot – helps remove virus and excess mucus from your nose.
  • Increase fluid intake – decreases body aches by maintaining hydration and keeps mucus thin to help avoid secondary sinus infection.
  • Take Vitamin C and Zinc supplements – may actually shorten the duration of your cold with their antioxidant powers.
  • Drink hot tea with ginger, honey, cayenne pepper and a shot of whiskey – this combination will help sore throats, coughs sinus and chest congestion as well as help you sleep better. The ginger and cayenne help to thin and clear mucus, the honey and whiskey act as a cough suppressant. This spicy combination is my go to any time I’m feeling a little bit under the weather.
  • Use Thieves oil – this proprietary blend from Young Living has antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties. I usually take a couple of drops a couple of times a day during cold and flu season.

As always, this is not medical advice, so use your judgment and get to know your body.

Finally, diligent hand-washing and keeping your hands away from your face will also reduce the likelihood of your actually catching a cold. Stay healthy this year!
